Ramping Up for 4.0!
Most of our clients
understand the benefits of maintaining their software, but it’s easy to neglect
other aspects that directly affect the performance of their MAS 90/200, such as
hardware or the operating system. The DataWest Group has been a big help to many
of our clients by identifying these issues at an early stage. If you begin to
notice increasing trouble with your software, often times the root of the
problem can be traced back to faulty or out-dated hardware. Another reason may
be that your company is running your applications on an old operating system.
With the February release of v4.0, now is a good time to take stock and address
potential problems.
As computers and operating
systems evolve and are released to the market, we always make sure that we can
provide support for them, like currently supporting Windows Server 2003 for MAS
90/200. The flip side is that it becomes more difficult to resolve issues with
older operating systems. The primary reason is because we (or even Best
Software) can no longer receive support or patches from the manufacturer to
support our clients after a retirement date. Typically, a platform will be
supported by Best Software for 5 to 7 years from the initial release. This is
based on the manufacturer’s (i.e. Microsoft, Novell, etc.) own intent to
discontinue support of their operating system on a specific date. We will always
try to help anyone on an older platform if we can, but it becomes more
difficult to support operating systems that have been “put out to pasture”.

It makes sense from a
productivity and economic standpoint to maintain your current system. If you are
on old operating system, the stability of the newer operating systems,
especially servers, is greater than ever before. Maintaining an older operating
system limits your ability to take advantage of the newest features in MAS
90/200, and takes away from the full benefits and functionality of your
accounting software.
